Folk art has always fascinated me for a number of reasons. It's raw, sometimes child-like nature allows for the pure emotion of a piece to come through, often creating a striking visual or social commentary. Typically folk artists are indigenous or struggling peoples with little to no formal education in the arts or otherwise.
Simply put by the Encyclopedia Britannica, Folk art is : "the creative expression of the human struggle toward civilization within a particular environment through the production of useful but aesthetic buildings and objects."

Artist: Roger Lee Evans | "Ab" The Flag Man gets his nickname from the fitting term “abstract.” He uses discarded wood and furniture in his amazing pieces and can usually be found at the annual House of Blues Folk Art Festival.
Artist: Howard Finster (1916 – 2001) | Coke Bottle. He was American Artist and Baptist minister from Georgia. His artwork can be found featured on album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads.
Artist: Jon Bok. Contrary to popular belief, the skulls he uses have no religious connotation. Bok depicts skulls in many pieces of his art work, simply because he says 'everyone has one'!
